Miao / Dong homestay picker

Village homestays range from genuinely restored wooden houses with outdoor squat toilets to "village-themed" boutique hotels with rain showers and electric blankets. Different travellers want different things. Here's how to match.

Village profiles

Xijiang is the largest, most commercial — has 4-star and budget. Zhaoxing is the cleanest, most livable. Basha is the most preserved Miao. Dali is the smallest and most authentic. Zhenyuan is an ancient river town, not a village.

Bathroom reality

Hot showers exist in most villages but the water pressure drops at dinner time. Western toilets are rare outside Xijiang and Zhaoxing. Bring wet-wipes and your own soap.

Heating

Most villages have no central heating. Wooden houses with a fire pit are warm; concrete-built hotels are colder than they look. Ask for an extra blanket in winter.

Common questions

Can I book through Trip.com or Booking?
The major villages (Xijiang, Zhaoxing) yes. Smaller villages usually only via WeChat or by calling the village head. Ask your driver to call ahead.
Is it OK to stay just 1 night?
Yes for Xijiang/Zhaoxing. No for Dali/Basha — the journey is too long for one night; the experience doesn't land.
What about food at the homestay?
Most offer dinner + breakfast. Dinner is usually ¥30–60/person and is the family's own cooking. This is the easiest way to try authentic 酸汤 / 糯米饭 / 腊肉.
