Guizhou summer cooldown city ranking

China's summer retreats get crowded in August, but Guizhou's plateau geography gives it a quiet edge: the higher the city, the cooler the night. This calculator ranks five Guizhou cities (Guiyang, Liupanshui, Bijie, Anshun, Xingyi) against your home heat, humidity tolerance and what you actually want to do on the trip.

How to read the result

Average highs

The numbers we use are 1991–2020 climatological averages from the China Meteorological Administration station closest to each city centre. July and August are the worst; June and September are noticeably milder on the plateau.

Summer night lows

The night-low matters more than the daytime high on a Guizhou trip — the plateau drops 8–12 °C after sundown. Liupanshui at 1,800 m sits around 17 °C at midnight in July, while Xingyi in the valley stays at 22 °C.

Verdict city

The single recommended base for your trip — the one we'd book first. It's not always the "coolest" city on paper; it depends on your humidity tolerance, what you want to do, and how you arrived (rail hub vs backcountry).

Common questions

Is Guiyang really a "summer capital"?
The "中国凉都" (Cool Capital of China) brand belongs to Liupanshui, not Guiyang. Guiyang markets itself as a summer capital because of summer night lows around 20 °C, but daytime highs of 27–28 °C aren't dramatic. If your goal is a real cooldown, head west.
What's Bijie like in summer?
Bijie sits around 1,500 m and gets warm summer days (~26 °C) and crisp nights (~18 °C). It's the gateway to 阿西里西大草原 (Asirxi Grassland) and 织金洞 (Zhijin Cave). Quieter than Liupanshui and cheaper for hotels.
Can I combine two of these cities on one trip?
Yes — Guiyang → Anshun → Xingyi is a flat-to-lowland triangle on the southwest line. For real cooldown, Guiyang → Bijie → Liupanshui adds altitude gradually and uses the same Guiyang–Liupanshui intercity rail.
