Specialty gift-shopping trap

The gift shop at every scenic gate sells the same plastic-wrapped "Miao silver" and the same "vintage Maotai" with a 30-year-old label. None of it is what it says. Real Guizhou specialties are good — but you have to know where to look.

Real price band

Most "scenic area" prices are 2–5× what you'd pay in a city supermarket. Real Maotai (飞天 53°) retails around ¥1,500 per bottle at the distillery; the airport sells for ¥2,500+.

Authenticity check

刺梨 juice: real is sour, not sweet. 波波糖: cracks cleanly, no oily film. Silver: 925 stamp + magnet test. Batik: visible wax cracks in the design.

Customs & shipping

Liquor limit on international flights: 2 bottles per adult (varies by airline). Silver is fine. Batik must be declared as textile. Spicy sauces must be sealed — leaks destroy your luggage.

Common questions

Is "vintage Maotai" at the gift shop real?
Almost always fake. Real vintage Maotai goes through official auction houses (永丰, 歌德). A 30-year bottle sold in a street shop is either refilled or labelled counterfeit. Buy only from the official Maotai distillery in Maotai town.
Where do locals buy their 刺梨 juice?
永辉 (Yonghui) and 北京华联 supermarkets in Guiyang, plus the small private brands sold at the Guizhou Specialty Store chain. Look for "刺梨" as the first ingredient, not "刺梨浓缩汁".
Can I ship silver home?
Yes — silver is duty-free up to a personal-use threshold. Declare at customs if the value is over your country's limit (varies: US $800, EU €430). The cooperative will ship to your hotel for ~¥30 within Guizhou.
