Rainy-day itinerary elasticity

Guizhou averages 1,100–1,300 mm of rain a year — more than London, half of which falls between May and August. A "Huangguoshu in clear skies" trip turns into a soaked-bus trip if you don't plan the elasticity. This tool tells you how many buffer days to insert, which sites are rain-friendly versus rain-disastrous, and a sample reshuffle.

How to read the result

Buffer days

The number of "spare" days you should reserve as plan-B slots. These can hold a mountain revisit, a cave, or a cooking class — anything indoor or weather-tolerant. Don't pre-book every day tight if you have flexibility.

Rain-friendly vs rain-disastrous

Two lists specific to Guizhou: caves, museums, hot springs, covered markets on one side; the open-air Huangguoshu walking path, the Baling River bridge platform, the Jiabang rice-terrace lookout on the other. Don't try to push the latter through.

Sample reshuffle

A worked example: if your Day 3 was the outdoor Huangguoshu ridge and it pours, what you swap it with — a day inside 织金洞 (Zhijin Cave), a slow Guiyang food crawl, or the 贵州省博物馆 (Guizhou Provincial Museum).

Common questions

Is there a "safe" month with little rain?
November to early December is the driest, but it's cold. Late March to mid-April is the second-driest with pleasant temperatures — combine with a check on the Qingming holiday dates.
What's the worst single thing that rain does to a trip?
Slips the whole outdoor path at Huangguoshu's Tianxing Bridge section, where the granite steps turn into a stream. The Doupotang pool viewpoint also loses its reflection. Most groups give up the outdoor walk on a heavy day and stay on the upper viewpoint.
Should I just bring a good rain jacket?
Yes — but the issue isn't you getting wet, it's the visibility drop. Karst landscape photography in fog is mostly a white wall. Plan your "view" days around the morning (less convection cloud) and keep the indoor reserves ready for the afternoon.
