Qiandongnan multi-day linker

Qiandongnan (黔东南) is the southeast prefecture — Miao silver, Dong drum towers, and rice terraces that turn gold in late September. The villages aren't far apart on a map, but the mountain roads and midday siestas make it a chain that mis-picks. This tool links your days, your transport mode, and your interest profile into a realistic template you can actually execute.

How to read the result

Anchor village

One Miao or Dong village is named as the day's "anchor" — the place you'll spend 2–3 hours walking the lanes, eating lunch, and (if your host is willing) watching the silver/forging demo. Don't double-cover: try (i.e. don't try to cram two anchor villages in one day). The mountain roads between them eat 1.5–3 hours each direction.

Lodging town

The town named for sleep isn't always the same as the anchor village. Self-drivers can sleep in Rongjiang and drive 30 min to a village the next morning. Public-transport travellers usually sleep in Kaili or Zhaoxing because the late-afternoon minibuses back to remote villages stop running.

Lunch closure

Almost every Qiandongnan village closes between 12:00 and 14:00 — including the workshops. The Miao silver-smiths go home, the indigo dyers go nap, the ticket kiosks keep the sign. If your anchor is a working village (e.g. Leishan / 雷山 / 控拜 or Dali village for 侗族 织染), arrive by 11:00 and leave by 14:30.

Common questions

Is Xijiang (西江千户苗寨) worth the staged-tourism reputation?
It's the largest Miao village in China and it is staged — entrance fee, shuttle bus, nightly song-and-dance show. Visit it for the visual scale (the 1,300 stilt-house lights at night are a real tradition), but don't keep the photography as your only Miao contact. One night is enough.
Do I need a guide to enter the villages?
For Xijiang, no, fees are annual. For Zhaoxing (肇兴侗寨) and most smaller villages, no ticket is required — but buying the entry ticket at Zhaoxing (¥80) gives you access to the drum-tower performances, which is the whole point. A guide is helpful for etiquette (don't point at the roof horns, don't step on the threshold) but not for entry.
Can I do Kaili + Xijiang + Zhaoxing in 2 days?
Technically yes if you self-drive and skip lunch closures. Realistically you'll see one anchor village properly. With public transport, even 2 anchors is tight — the Kaili→Xijiang→Congjiang→Zhaoxing chain has 3 transfer points and 4–5 hours of waiting per day. Three days is the realistic floor for two anchors.
