How to read the result
The ranking
The five candidates are scored against your five inputs. Each card explains why it ranks where it does and what you give up by choosing it.
The warnings
Some candidates have a "new vs old" split, an over-touristy core, or a road-access trap. The warning box flags the single thing that ruins the trip if you didn't know.
The hidden gem
One village per result that 95% of tourists skip — usually because it's harder to reach or has no English signage. That's where the experience lives.
What this tool can't tell you
- Whether a specific homestay has hot water on the day you stay — varies wildly even within the same village. Read recent reviews.
- The state of festival calendars this year — Miao New Year dates shift by lunar calendar each year, and some sub-groups run different Lusheng festivals on different weeks.
- Real-time crowd levels. National holidays (Oct 1–7, Chinese New Year week, Dragon Boat) make Xijiang an unbearable crush; the tool warns you but can't predict exact density.
- Whether you'll be granted a homestay at all during peak season — Xijiang's family inns fill 6+ weeks ahead around Spring Festival.
- The personal-fit question of "Miao vs Dong vibe." Some travellers find Dong villages calmer and more hospitable; others find the Miao silver and costume more visually striking. Visit one of each if you can.
