Maotai town distillery routing

Maotai (茅台) town is a baijiu pilgrimage site — half museum, half distillery, half shopping street with one of China's most counterfeited bottles. Knowing the rules saves you from a fake and a wasted afternoon.

How to read the result

Three distilleries

Maotai (official, ¥1,500/bottle retail). Yanghe (more accessible, ¥100–400). Xijiu (local favourite, ¥50–200). Each has a different tour. The official Maotai is the only one where you can buy at retail.

The lottery

Real Maotai (飞天 53°) is rationed. You need to draw a ticket in the app, win the lottery, then present ID at the distillery gate. Lottery opens ~monthly. Don't show up without a ticket.

Customs limit

International flight from China: 1.5L of liquor per adult (2 bottles of 750 mL). Customs will confiscate excess. Domestic flights: 4 bottles free; more needs declaration.

Common questions

Can I just walk into the distillery and buy?
No, not for 飞天 Maotai. The lottery system is in place because demand exceeds supply. Smaller Maotai products (汉酱, 仁酒) are sold without lottery but at lower volumes.
Is the tour in English?
Maotai distillery: only by pre-arrangement, ¥500 extra for an English guide. Yanghe / Xijiu: Chinese only. Use translation app otherwise.
Is Maotai town worth it without drinking?
Yes — the town has the Red Army crossing-the-river site (四渡赤水), a baijiu museum, and the slow pace of a small river town. Easy day trip from Zunyi.
