Long-hike gear & oxygen planner

Multi-day Guizhou hikes — Fanjing (2572m), Leigongshan (2178m), Jiucaiping (2900m), Shibing Yunshan (2200m) — sit at high altitude with karst exposure. The weather flips in 30 minutes; the gear list is unforgiving. Plan it.

Weight budget

Daypack should weigh ≤ 25% of your body weight. Multi-day with overnight gear: aim for 10–14 kg total. Every 500 g matters on switchbacks.

Oxygen strategy

Canned O₂ at scenic gates is 3–6 L; enough for a 30-minute pause, not a serious episode. Real altitude sickness requires descent. Carry one can per person as insurance.

Weather

Summer afternoon storms are common. Above 2000m the temperature drops 6–8 °C per 1000 m. Bring shell + insulation even in July.

Common questions

Are the canned oxygen actually useful?
For mild fatigue, yes. For real altitude sickness, descent is the only fix. The cans are sold by vendors above 1500 m. Buy one if you've never been at altitude.
Do I need trekking poles?
Strongly recommended for any 2+ day hike. Saves ~25% knee load on descents. Most rental shops in Guiyang have them for ¥30/day.
Is wild camping allowed?
Generally no on the major peaks. Fanjing, Leigongshan, Jiucaiping all restrict wild camping. Hut system exists on Fanjing and Leigongshan; book ahead via the scenic office WeChat.
