How to read the result
Water band
We bucket the falls into four bands — Trickle, Normal, Strong, Peak — based on the seasonal pattern of the Beipan River basin. A "Strong" reading in late June is a different experience than "Strong" in October.
Cave status
The Water Curtain Cave (水帘洞) closes during peak flood because spray saturates the walkway and steps become dangerously slick. Closures are usually posted at the entrance and on Anshun's tourism site the morning of.
Crowd pressure
Chinese public holidays (Spring Festival, May Day, National Day week) and the August peak drive the worst crowds. Shoulder months with strong water (May, September) are the sweet spot.
What this tool can't tell you
- Real-time water level on the day. The Anshun weather bureau issues advisories when rainfall crosses thresholds; check the morning of.
- Whether the scenic area shuttle (required) is operating its full route. Some inner sections close for maintenance on rotating weekdays.
- Whether fog has closed the upper viewpoints. The plateau micro-climate can shroud the falls for an hour even in sunny months.
- Personal fatigue after the 6 km walk between the main falls, the Doupotang pool, and the Tianxing Bridge section. Budget 4–5 hours, not 2.
