EV battery on karst terrain

Guizhou is a great place to drive an EV — until you turn off the highway. Charging density in cities is excellent, but on the karst backcountry you'll need to plan every stop. This tool corrects your real-world range for the Guizhou-specific derate factors.

How to read the result

Temperature derate

Guizhou winter (Dec–Feb) regularly drops to 0–5 °C at altitude. Battery output drops 15–20%; AC in summer adds 8–10%. The summer monsoon also brings headwind drag in storms.

Altitude correction

Going up uses energy; going down regenerates (but regen caps at ~70% of uphill loss). A 1000 m net climb in a 50 km leg costs ~10% more range than the flat estimate suggests.

Charging stops

Tesla superchargers at Guiyang, Anshun, Zunyi, Kaili. State Grid in smaller towns. NIO swap stations in Guiyang + Zunyi. Last-resort slow AC chargers at some village homestays — ask ahead.

Common questions

Can I rely on regen down mountain passes?
Partially. Most EVs cap regen at 70–80% recovery on a steep pass, so a 1000 m climb still costs net 20–30% range. On the Tongren→Fanjing pass you may need to charge at the bottom.
What about charging at village homestays?
Most don't have a charger, but many owners will run an extension cord from their household socket — slow (2–3 km range per hour) but enough to start the next day. Ask before booking.
Is NIO battery swap an option?
Yes, in Guiyang and Zunyi. Outside those two cities, swap stations thin out. If you're renting a NIO, check the swap-station map before locking in your route.
