How to read the result
Real duration
"Half day" at a typical demo workshop is 1.5–2 hours of actual work plus 30 min of talking. A real full-day workshop has 5 hours of hands-on. If your booking says "half day" and ends before lunch, it's a demo.
What you make
Batik: a small cotton scarf or panel. Embroidery: a small motif. Paper: 4–6 sheets. Silver: a small charm. The "take-home" quality varies wildly — ask to see a recent participant's output.
Child fit
Children under 10 generally do better at paper-making (forgiving, physical) or simple batik (drawing with wax). Embroidery and silver require fine motor control and don't suit most kids under 12.
What this tool can't tell you
- Whether the master is in a good mood that day. Craftspeople have off-days; you may not get their best.
- How your hands-on work will turn out. The masters keep their standards high — your piece may be visibly less polished than theirs.
- Whether the dye vat is fresh. Old indigo vats give a better blue but smell stronger.
- The "tourist markup" factor on materials. ¥50 for the cloth sounds like a lot until you see the loom work.

How do I avoid the demo-only scam?
Can my 7-year-old actually participate?
Is it worth doing in Guiyang or should I go to the villages?
