Silver / batik / embroidery village picker

Guizhou is one of the last places in China where hand-made craft is still a living village industry. The catch: some "workshops" are 20-minute demos for tourists, while others are real cooperatives with master artisans. Pick the right one for what you actually want to do.

How to read the result

Cost band

Daily workshops typically ¥150–400 per person including materials. Multi-day apprenticeships ¥800–1500 per day. Buying finished pieces is separate and negotiable.

Book ahead

Demo workshops in popular villages accept walk-ins. Real hands-on sessions usually need 1–3 days' notice — the master needs to prepare materials, especially for silver.

Shipping

Silver and small textiles ship easily. Large batik canvases need tube packing and customs declaration. Many cooperatives will ship to your hotel in Guiyang for ~¥30.

Common questions

Is Miao silver real silver?
Often not — "Miao silver" (苗银) is usually a higher-silver alloy (60–80%) rather than sterling. Check the stamp; a magnet test will rule out obvious fakes. We have a separate tool for authenticity checks.
Which village has the most authentic batik?
Anlong (安龙) and Dali (大利) villages still use beeswax-resist dyeing on hand-loomed cotton. Anshun-area workshops often use machine-printed fabric. Ask to see the wax-pot.
How do I find a workshop that isn't on TripAdvisor?
Ask your homestay host. They usually know a family cooperative in the next village that doesn't have a TripAdvisor listing. Bring small bills and gift tea or rice.
